Preparing thoughtful teacher interview questions can make all the difference when it comes to hiring the right educator or landing your dream job. Whether you’re a school leader looking for great candidates or a teacher getting ready for your next interview, having a solid list of questions on hand helps you feel confident, focused, and prepared.
Even though I’m running on caffeine and to-do lists, my mind is already jumping ahead to next year. I’ve started working on curriculum orders and helping plan staffing for the upcoming school year.
My principal recently asked me to sit in on interviews for prospective teachers, which is exciting, but also a little nerve-wracking! Before jumping in, my Type A self decided I needed to be fully prepared, so of course, I created a list of teacher interview questions that I think will help us find the best possible fit for our school community.
Teacher Interview Questions
Now, let me be honest—I hate interviews! Whether I’m the one answering questions or asking them, I turn red, get sweaty, and stumble over my words. And if it’s a panel interview? Forget about it! The only thing that helps calm my nerves is being overly prepared. Having a solid list of thoughtful questions helps me feel more confident and focused during the process.
I designed this list to be helpful for people on both sides of the table. Whether you’re an administrator or teacher leader looking for strong interview questions, or a new teacher trying to prepare for your first big interview, this resource can help guide your thinking. I even left space after each question so interviewers can take notes, or so candidates can jot down thoughtful responses as they practice.

If you’re looking for even more ideas, I highly recommend checking out Facebook teacher groups. There are so many helpful communities where educators share real interview experiences and question lists from different districts. It’s a great way to see what kinds of teacher interview questions are trending and get honest advice from teachers who’ve recently been through the process. You can even post your own questions or do mock interview prep with other teachers who are in the same boat. It’s such a supportive and practical way to prepare.
Another effective way to enhance your interview preparation is to reflect on your teaching philosophy. Think about what makes you unique as an educator, your classroom management style, how you build relationships with students, and how you approach lesson planning or differentiation. Many interview questions center around these areas, so taking time to put your thoughts into words can help you feel more confident and authentic when you’re in the hot seat.

I’ve also found it helpful to collaborate with colleagues during the hiring process. Hearing other perspectives on what makes a strong candidate often gives me insight into things I might not have considered. For example, one teacher might focus on instructional strategies, while another looks for signs of flexibility or teamwork. Discussing these priorities as a team before interviews helps ensure that everyone is aligned and that the hiring process reflects the values of your school community.
I hope this resource helps make the interview process a little less intimidating and a lot more productive. Whether you’re helping hire the next great addition to your school team or preparing to land your dream teaching job, feeling organized and confident makes all the difference.
