If you’re looking for a sweet and simple way to get families involved in your classroom while decorating for the season, this March bulletin board idea is just what you need! This project centers on the theme “Lucky to Be a Family” and encourages students to celebrate the people they love most, their families.
This March, I sent home a family project asking students and their caregivers to work together on decorating a large shamrock. The idea was simple: fill the shamrock with family photos, drawings, or special notes that represent what makes their family special. The results were beautiful, heartfelt, and absolutely perfect for our March bulletin board display.
How It Works: A Simple and Meaningful Family Project
The goal of this March bulletin board is to combine seasonal fun with a meaningful connection to home. Here’s how I set it up:
- Send Home a Note to Families
I included a short note explaining the project and inviting families to participate by decorating a shamrock together at home. The note contained a brief explanation of the theme “Lucky to Be a Family” and offered suggestions, such as adding family photos, special memories, or kind words written to their child. - Provide a Shamrock Template
Along with the note, I sent home a large shamrock outline that families could cut out and decorate. I encouraged them to get creative with markers, stickers, glitter, magazine cutouts—anything that showcased their family’s personality. - Collect and Display the Shamrocks
Once the shamrocks were returned, we proudly displayed them on our March bulletin board under a banner that read “Lucky to Be a Family.” Each shamrock told a unique story, and students loved walking past the board, pointing out their pictures and admiring their classmates’ work.

Extend the Learning with Shamrock-Themed Books
To tie everything together, consider reading some shamrock-themed books during story time to build background knowledge and seasonal vocabulary. Here are a few great titles:
- “Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato” by Tomie dePaola – While not directly about shamrocks, this Irish folktale brings the spirit of the season and Irish culture to life.
- “The Luckiest St. Patrick’s Day Ever!” by Teddy Slater – A fun and festive rhyming book that celebrates everything green.
- “That’s What Leprechauns Do” by Eve Bunting – A silly and magical story that brings a touch of leprechaun mischief into your classroom.
Celebrate Families with Picture Books
Since the bulletin board focuses on family, you can also integrate some family-themed books into your classroom library or circle time. Here are a few favorites that promote the beauty of family diversity and love:
- “The Family Book” by Todd Parr – This inclusive book celebrates all types of families with bold illustrations and simple language.
- “All Kinds of Families” by Mary Ann Hoberman – A rhyming read-aloud that looks at family in both literal and creative ways.
- “Love Makes a Family” by Sophie Beer – Bright, colorful pages highlight the love that holds families together, no matter what they look like.
Why This March Bulletin Board Is a Classroom Favorite
This project always turns out to be one of the most cherished bulletin boards of the year. It’s a meaningful way to celebrate students’ lives outside of school and gives families a chance to be part of the classroom environment. The children beam with pride as they see their families displayed in such a thoughtful way.
Plus, it’s an easy, low-prep activity for teachers that yields big rewards in classroom community and family engagement.
Bring a little love and luck into your classroom this March with a bulletin board that truly celebrates what matters most: family!
