Halloween is just around the corner, and what better way to get into the spooky spirit than with a fun and creative art project for your kindergarteners? In this blog post, I’ll guide you through a simple yet delightful Halloween art project that will have your little ones excited to create their own bat silhouette flying in the night sky. It’s a great way to combine art, Halloween festivities, and fine motor skills development all in one!
There are so many fun Halloween art projects out there and today I wanted to show you one that really looked fantastic hanging on our classroom walls! This Halloween art project is also great for schools that don’t allow you to talk about or celebrate the actual holiday. Added bonus – It’s the perfect ending activity to a unit on bats!
Halloween Art Project Preparation
To complete this Halloween art project you need three different shades of blue and one black acrylic paint. I love using the small paint palettes from Dollar Tree for pretty much every art project I do in class. You can also find them from Oriental Trading and of course Amazon. I also just use the inexpensive paintbrushes from Dollar Tree.
When I first tried this project with my students I gave them a blank piece of paper, showed them a picture, and expected them to make the circles on their own. Needless to say, it didn’t go well.
The next year I gave them a paper with pre-printed lines, and the result was amazing!
Tips to Teach
Before you have the students start the project you will want to remind/show them these tips:
- Leave the center circle blank.
- Color over the black lines that are on the paper.
- Wash your brush after each color (I put a cup of water and a paper towel at each table).
- It’s okay if the colors overlap a little, in fact, it looks great when they do!
- Paint the outer edges black.
- There should be no white showing except for the middle circle.
Encourage them to be creative by adding stars and maybe even a crescent moon. Let their imaginations run wild!
For the bats, I used the die-cut press at my school and the bat outline on black construction paper. If you don’t have the old die-cut press at your school I have included some bat outlines in the freebie below.
Print the bat silhouettes on black paper. I know it doesn’t seem like the black lines will show on the black paper, but I promise they will!
I give each student a bat silhouette to cut out and tell them they can put it anywhere on their painting.
With this simple and engaging Halloween art project, your kindergarteners will have a blast creating their very own bat silhouettes flying in the night sky. It’s a wonderful way to foster creativity, fine motor skills, and holiday spirit in the classroom. Display their artwork proudly and let it add a touch of spooky charm to your Halloween decorations this year!
