Ideas for Winter Bulletin Boards

Winter bulletin boards are among my absolute favorite classroom projects. There’s just something about snowy scenes, cozy colors, and winter themes that instantly make a room feel warm and inviting. And since I live in San Diego, winter bulletin boards give me the fun illusion of a winter wonderland, even if it’s 80 degrees outside and students are still wearing short sleeves!

December can be one of the most hectic months of the school year. Between holiday excitement, assemblies, special events, and shortened attention spans, it can feel like you’re just trying to survive until winter break. When we finally return in January, I like everything in my classroom to feel fresh and new, not just for my students, but for myself too. A refreshed environment helps set the tone for a strong start to the second half of the year.

A couple of years into teaching, I had a big realization that changed the way I handled winter bulletin boards. Instead of waiting until January to create new displays, I started having my students complete winter-themed crafts before winter break in December. That way, everything was ready to go when we returned. Some years, I’d stop by school during break to switch out the boards. Other years, I’d simply have the wording, borders, and student work neatly stacked and ready to hang as soon as we were back.

This simple strategy saved me so much time and mental energy. Walking into a classroom in January with winter bulletin boards already prepared made me feel organized, calm, and ready to jump back into learning. If you can squeeze in even one or two winter bulletin board activities before break, I promise it will make a huge difference when January rolls around.

Below are some of my favorite winter bulletin board activities that are easy to prep, engaging for students, and look amazing once displayed.

Warm Up With a Good Book

This winter bulletin board pairs perfectly with reading themes. Students can create simple book-related crafts or writing responses about their favorite winter stories. Add cozy visuals like mittens, scarves, or mugs of hot cocoa to really bring the theme together.

Newspaper Polar Bear

This is a classic winter art project that always turns out adorable. Using newspaper adds texture and makes each polar bear unique. It’s also a great way to sneak in fine motor practice while creating a visually striking winter bulletin board. This is from I Heart Craft things and she has tons of cute polar bear ideas!

Winter Landscapes

I love the colors in this project from Mrs. Knight’s Smartest Artists!

Smart Cookies

I don’t have a specific link for this bulletin board, but it’s very easy to recreate using a die-cut machine. Students can design snowy hills, trees, or winter skies. I also think it would be so cute to add your favorite gingerbread books around the board for an extra literacy connection.

Penguin Art

Penguins are always a student favorite! This art project from All Students Can Shine works beautifully for winter bulletin boards, especially when paired with a patterned or mosaic-style background. I’ve also done this same project using polar bears, and both versions were absolutely adorable.

3D Polar Bear

If you’re looking for something that really stands out, a 3D polar bear craft by Arty Craft Kids makes a fantastic winter bulletin board. These displays add depth and instantly catch attention in the hallway or classroom.

New Year’s Resolution Craft

January is the perfect time to talk about goals. A New Year’s resolution winter bulletin board (by Miss Giraffe) allows students to reflect, set simple goals, and practice writing skills, all while decorating your room.

Life in a Snowglobe

This is one of my favorite winter bulletin board ideas because it allows for creativity and individuality. Students can draw themselves, a winter scene, or a favorite activity inside a snowglobe template. Every snowglobe from All About 3rd Grade looks different, which makes the display extra special.

You really can’t go wrong with snowmen. They’re simple, versatile, and perfect for winter bulletin boards at any grade level. Pair them with writing prompts, names, or math facts for an academic twist.
