You’re almost done with your first week of teaching kindergarten! Let’s talk about some activities for The Rainbow Fish! I’m sure just about everyone has this book in their classroom library. It’s a great way to talk about friendship and sharing!
Daily Schedule
- 8 am – Arrival and Morning Work – Review arrival procedures and complete another scissor fine motor activity.
- 8:30 am – Calendar and Class Rules – practice calendar routines, discuss your final classroom rule, and color the corresponding coloring page.
- 9:00 am – Teach Routines – Working from my procedures list, review any procedures that your class seems to be struggling with, or teach ones that you haven’t been able to get to yet.
- 9:30 am – Assessment – Shape match-up
Routines and Assessment
At this point, I have usually covered all of my big topics on the procedures list. It varies class by class, but I am usually just reviewing procedures at this point.
Every class is different, some years, we have practiced lining up and walking in a straight line until I am blue in the face. Other years, we need to practice cleaning up immediately after the bell has rung, and some years, I hardly need to repeat anything!
I find it hard to get through every single small routine or procedure during the first week. Some procedures need to be taught once we get going on our full schedule and when we add in special classes or events. I keep the procedures list on my desk the first couple of weeks just so that I make sure everything gets covered.
- 9:55 am – Routines – choose a routine that needs to be reviewed or that you haven’t covered yet.
- 10 am – Recess
- 10:15 am – Routines – Choose one from the list that makes sense.
- 10:25 am – Language Arts – Read The Rainbow Fish and complete the sight word match-up.
- 10:50 am – Routines – Choose from the list.
- 11:00 am – Math – Counting and number recognition practice.
Finishing Up
- 11:20 am – Art – Celery stick rainbow fish
- 11:40 am – Routines – End of the day procedures, cleanliness, and packing-up expectations.
- 11:50 am – Clean-up/Pack-up
- 12:00 pm – Dismissal
