Description
Ready to take your students on a geography adventure? This map skills unit is one of my favorite resources for the early elementary classroom. It makes a tricky concept feel totally manageable (and really fun!) for little learners.
This unit walks students through everything they need to know about reading a map, starting with the compass rose and cardinal directions, building into spatial reasoning, and finishing with real map-reading practice using legends and keys. The best part? Every worksheet is designed so that following the directions is part of the learning — sneaking in executive function practice without students even realizing it!
Here’s what your students will practice:
- Understanding and using a compass rose to identify map directions
- Spatial reasoning — describing where things are on a map in relation to each other
- Reading a map legend and creating their very own
- Interpreting maps to answer questions and gather information
- Graphing and labeling activities that connect social studies to math and literacy
This unit is scaffolded with kindergarten and first-grade learners in mind, so the language is simple, the visuals are clear, and the tasks build naturally from one to the next. It works beautifully for whole-group lessons, small groups, or independent center work.
If you’re looking for a resource that makes map skills feel exciting and accessible for your K–1 students, this one is for you!
